Service fuels my research and teaching. Through the years, service has taken on various forms in my career.
I am grateful for all the lessons I learned as a volunteer within my professional communities and institutions.
I have had the privilege to serve within my professional communities: as physician, peer reviewer of research manuscripts, and Project Management Professional.
I serve the public health physician community in the Philippines by continuing to collaborate with the Alliance for Improving Health Outcomes, the Philippine Society for Public Health Physicians and Physicians for Peace Philippines. Additionally, I worked with HealthXPH (a network of Filipino physicians advocating for responsible use of social media in healthcare), Tambalista, Inc. (a group of Filipino scientists and advocates promoting research on nature-based products), and Future Earth Philippines.
Internationally, I am an alumnus of the InterAcademy Partnership’s Young Physician Leaders (2019) and a co-lead convenor of the YPL Alumni Steering Committee (2021 – present). Previously, I was involved with Global Health Focus, a network of global health-oriented health professionals and researchers that, among other objectives, aims to increase representation of low- and middle-income countries in global policy, advocacy and research.
I serve as peer reviewer of the following journals: Acta Medica Philippina, Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, BMC Global Health Research and Policy, Philippine Journal of Public Administration, Philippine Journal of Science, PLOS One, Public Health Challenges. I am also part of the editorial board of the following: Asian Journal of Public Health Practice, Public Health Challenges.
As a Project Management Professional, I am actively involved with Duke's Project Management Community of Practice (CoP), where I co-facilitate discussions on preparing for professional certification.
At Duke PopHealth, I was formerly part of the Culture, Engagement and Impact Committee and the Implementation Science Faculty Search Committee at the Department of Population Health Sciences, as well as former interim PhD student president of the Population Health Sciences Graduate Student Association
More broadly within Duke, I am an Ambassador at Duke’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program,. I served as a peer mentor for the Responsible Conduct of Research program at Duke School of Medicine’s Office for Biomedical Graduate Education. I was also a scholar of the former Biosciences Collaborative for Research Engagement program.
At the University of the Philippines College of Public Health, I served as part of the Master of Public Health Committee for its hybrid offering for rural health physicians; I also helmed the Information Committee, a precursor to its current Communication Office. I was also appointed as Special Assistant to the Dean.
Apart from my service to my professional communities and institutions, previously, I was a volunteer project director for the Gawad Kalinga Poveda Village in Pinagsama, Taguig City, Philippines, and carried out free clinics at the Canossa Health and Social Center in Bulihan, Silang, Cavite, Philippines (as part of faculty duties for service learning with San Beda University). I also participated in medical missions organized by the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity at the University of the Philippines.
More recently, I have been part of volunteer opportunities as part of the former BioCoRE program at Duke's School of Medicine; these opportunities included occasional shifts at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, Diaper Bank of North Carolina, and the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
